  • RoboCop comes out of retirement

July 24th, 2008 by adam arseneau · 5 Comments · News, Strange and Unusual · Print This Post

RoboCop… 4? Dear god, why.So who wants another RoboCop movie? Whoever you are, you should probably report to your local police station and turn yourself in. Somehow, your prayers have been answered, from the most unlikely of sources:

[...] RoboCop is coming out of retirement courtesy of director Darren Aronofsky and writer David Self. The writer-director of The Fountain and the writer of Road to Perdition have signed deals to develop a big-budget 21st century installment in the saga of the human-machine hybrid crime fighter.

Phoenix Pictures’ Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer, Brad Fischer and David Thwaites will produce. Cale Boyter, executive vp production at MGM, will oversee for the studio. Although the Lion has not greenlighted the reinvention, it has fast-tracked RoboCop for a 2010 release, when the studio plans to roll out its new slate.

A new RoboCop movie? Really? I mean, sure, the first RoboCop was great in its own right, and RoboCop 2 had moments of Frank Miller-inspired brilliance that shone through the crap… but after RoboCop 3, I can’t imagine anyone wanting more. The jetpack… ugh.

That being said, Aronofsky is not a man to be taken lightly in the director’s chair. The dude could very well surprise us.

Perhaps most alarmingly is this small tidbit tucked in the bottom of the article:

In resuscitating the MGM brand, Parent and company have been looking to the studio’s library for ripe remake material. Revamps of Red Dawn, Fame, Poltergeist and Death Wish are all in the works.

There is so much wrong with this.

Sheesh. As much as I love Darren Aronofsky’s films, I can’t imagine him tackling this one.

Somewhere along the way, Hollywood is going to need to stop feeding on itself and start moving forward instead. This generation of filmmakers: Darren Aronofsky, Christopher Nolan, Richard Kelly, etc. were supposed to get the bus turned around. Now it looks like most of them have just climbed on the tour bus and lost any of their creativity and uniqueness. I don’t necessarily hate the idea of a Robocop remake, but Aronofsky is so far above this material.

I’m ready to bash Stallone thinking he could be Paul Kersey in the DEATH WISH remake. Also, the new POLTERGEIST film is plain unncessary (even if it is written by one of the original screenwriters)…why can’t they just leave well enough alone? Chris :)

I’m intrigued by the idea of an Aronofsky “Robocop”… in principle, I’m against the idea of another “Robocop”, but…

      A. It can’t possibly be worse than “Robocop 3″… can it?

      B. At least it’s not going to be directed by Paul W.S. Anderson.
