Fire ravages Universal Studios backlot

June 1st, 2008 by Michael Stailey · 1 Comment · News, Strange and Unusual · Print This Post

An early morning fire broke out on the New York streets section of Universal Studios Hollywood famed backlot. Reports are that a production was shooting at the time and that exploding propane tanks may have ignited the blaze. 300 firefighters were called to the scene, but given the heavy wood structure of the facades, it was difficult to contain, once it got started. The nearby sound stage containing the King Kong exhibit is already considered a total loss. Studio reps say the theme park will maintain normal operating hours today and the studio tour will be adjusted to avoid the area.

A small comfort, but I’m glad the Clock Tower from Back To The Future survived the fire.
