With the recent success of the Iron Man franchise and Marvel’s interest in wrangling together further adaptations of heroes like Thor, The Incredible Hulk and Captain America, it seems more and more likely the hinted-at Avengers project will finally see the light of day. On the subject of the Captain America franchise, the rumors have swung from the horrific (Matthew McConaughey?) to the sublime (a vintage WWII action film).

According to CHUD, who had the opportunity to sit in with Marvel head Kevin Feige, it looks like Marvel is sticking to their roots and setting their upcoming Captain American movie during World War II, making it quite possibly the first superhero period piece.

As it should be! Arguments for canonical purity aside, it thrills me to hear this news, because if a better movie plot can be a blue spandex-wearing dude with a shield flying into Nazi Germany to duke it out with Hitler can be found, I don’t want to hear about it.
